Rumour: Activision may discontinue the CoD World League

An offline league would replace it.

      HQ

Rumours have appeared online that Activision is looking at options to discontinue the Call of Duty World League in favour of an offline league to start in spring 2017.

Apparently Activision's esports division held a conference call with many of the 2016 World League owners on Tuesday, proposing these competitive changes. Multiple sources who participated in the call have allegedly revealed this information.

In this call, Kevin Flynn, Call of Duty World League's Senior Manager of Esports, told teams that Activison would like to stop competitions that were hosted on PSN in 2016, and upon release of Infinite Warfare would instead like to run consistent offline events, awarding circuit points depending on a team's placement.

Apparently they also proposed that sometime in March or April they would like to host the "Global Super Bowl", which would be an offline league of 16 teams (10 of which would be from North America, four or five from Europe and one or two from Australia and New Zealand) based on these circuit points. This would take place at the Major League Gaming Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

If this plan happens, Activision apparently said it would provide housing and relocation costs for the teams involved, and in between the splits of this league there would be a midseason transfer period, just like with the existing World League. The approval process of European and Oceanic competitors was not discussed in said call, according to sources, but one would imagine an athlete visa would be needed.

The World League system has had issues, with the PSN occasionally crashing for hours on end, forcing matches to be canceled or rescheduled, and should Activision make these changes, they will join the likes of Riot Games who have also chosen offline tournaments and leagues.

What do you think of the proposed changes, if they are in fact true?
